Flange and axialflex®: front and rear encoder interfaces

When choosing an encoder, ease-of-integration is one of the most impor-tant criteria to consider. Selecting an encoder with intelligent connection options makes good commercial sense, too.

In 2006, Lenord + Bauer successfully launched the GEL 235 absolute rotary en-coder from the Sensorline range. The innovative scanning of a ferromagnetic vernier disk using GMR elements as well as an optional multiturn gear made it possible to combine the advantages of the optical and magnetic systems in an extremely compact encoder (overall depth 46.5 mm) for the first time. Customers have since come to appreciate the added value they get with the high accuracy of the conventional optical systems combined with the robustness and longevity of the magnetic systems.

The new way of scanning is not the only factor that has led to the GEL 235’s popularity as a multiturn encoder, however. Customers have also been im-pressed by the device’s integration capabilities.
On the mechanical side, the Sensorline absolute rotary encoder can be mounted via the usual types of flange such as clamping flange, synchro flange and semi-hollow shaft. With the latter variant, a patented spring steel sheet enables mounting on shafts that are subject to severe vibration without impairing encoder function.

Connection with the system is via “bus caps”, which are available for the CANopen and PROFIBUS DP protocols. The relevant bus cables can be connected via screwed cable glands or conventional M12 plugs.
For dynamic processes, fast synchronous serial interfaces (SSIs) are often used. Lenord + Bauer has developed a special feature for the SSI connection that has been welcomed by those who manage the commercial side of an enterprise as much as by engineers. The “axialflex” connection enables both an axial and a radial cable outlet, but without too great an increase in the overall depth.  This is a good thing from an engineer’s perspective. Meanwhile, those looking after the business side appreciate the 8.5 mm deep axialflex cable cap, because two or more mounting situations are possible with a single device. This makes stock-keeping easier and reduces the materials inventory required.

The GEL 235 absolute rotary encoder uses an innovative scanning technique and enables safe operation of a plant over several years. The conventional mechanical and bus interfaces make it easy to integrate into the machinery. "axialflex" therefore offers greater flexibility and makes parts management easier for purchasing departments.
