Machine for assuring the quality of embossed packaging foils

 The task:

L+B was to develop a solution for controlling the embossing roller test machine permitting both user-friendly verification of customer requirements and documentation of the results.

Aim:

 Method of solution:

Metal-coated tobacco packaging foils undergo pattern and text embossing before being used. Embossing rollers made for this purpose by an external company are installed as self-contained cassettes in the machine producing the cigarettes.

Before installation in the production machine, the behavior of the embossing cassettes is verified in a test machine.

For this purpose the embossing cassette is connected to a motor which simulates the feed function of the production machine. Due to the folding of the cigarette boxes after embossing, the rollers never run at constant speed. This operation needs to be simulated in the test machine. The behavior of the feed function and load must correspond to that of the machine so that the result of the embossing can be verified before installation in the production machine.

 Our solution:

The drive motor is controlled by a digital controller with built-in MotionCard LD100. The test machine is operated by means of the CoDeSys IEC 1131-3 programming software. The simulation process is programmed in three operating modes, the roller diameter being specified in each case. It is thus possible for various rollers to be tested and the results of the simulation are documented automatically.

The manufacturer of the embossing cassettes is now able to eliminate any operating errors in the product before installation in the production machine and can, in addition, provide the documentation as evidence that the specified requirements have been verified.
