| Uniform drum sizes by sensing the material path when winding coils |

The task:
Replacement of antiquated, analog measurement method for determining quantities, with the
requirement that existing components be integrated.
Aim:
- increased flexibility
- shorter resetting times
Method of solution:
As soon as the aluminum has reached its preset diameter, it leaves the mill train and once the
material has cooled it is automatically wound on a coil. The weight and diameter of the coil varies
depending on the diameter of the material.
Our solution:
A sensor is placed on the material and one on the winder in order to gauge precisely the quantity
of material. The coil diameter is calculated by sensing the path of the material in conjunction
with rotation of the coil; the coil diameter is output as an analog signal in the range 0 through
10V corresponding to a diameter of 0 (theoretical) to dmax, with the maximum diameter being preset
manually. The GEL 8240 operator terminal enables simpler operation and drums of a uniform standard
size are produced.
