Creative sensor solutions for icebreaker

Creative sensor solutions for icebreaker

The task:  The task:

A redundant sensor system was needed for an icebreaker. The externally mounted electric drives are housed in a gondola under the hull of the ship and are supplied by a mechanically decoupled power unit located inside the ship. In these conditions, the sensor system is exposed to temperature fluctuations, dirt and condensation as well as to extremely strong electromagnetic fields.

Method of solution:  Method of solution:

Lenord + Bauer developed a customized magnetic incremental encoder system with an additional reference signal track. Offering impressive ease of assembly, the system consists of three components – a measuring scale, a sensor and an electronics module. The system design was adapted to suit the difficult mounting location.

Our solution:  Our solution:
The sensor module produces analog differential signals (sinusoidal) which are converted into digital signals (square wave) in the electronics module connected downstream. The result is two incremental tracks with a 90° phase offset and a reference track and the associated inverted tracks. The signals are transmitted to the electronics module over a special double screened, twisted pair cable up to 15 meters in length. The sensor module remains insensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI) even when exposed to the electromagnetic fields generated by the motor.

Our service offering:  Our service offering:

Special sensors with design customized for the shipbuilder.

Customer benefits:  Customer benefits:

Extreme reliability of the solution developed – maintenance work is really only possible on the system in dry dock.
